Why Are Some Vans Beyond Repair?
When a van or vehicle becomes damaged beyond economical repair it simply means it needs to be disposed of and is no longer of use to the owner, in this short blog we will take a look at the most common factors that cause this.
1. Multiple Small Faults Creating A Bigger Problem
Sometimes when a vehicle becomes damaged beyond economical repair it isn’t down to one major fault but a stock pile of smaller faults. So if there are enough small faults accumulated then this could mean the vehicle becomes damaged beyond echolocation repair. For example bodywork problems, brake issues, small suspension problems and tyre faults these faults are commonly identified through MOTs if so this means the vehicle will be off road until the faults are fixed and the test can be passed.
2. Cambelt Snaps
Cambelts are classed as a service item and need to be replaced accordingly with the manufacturer instructions and they vary widely depending on mileage anywhere between 40,000 and 100,000. A broken cambelt will not be enough to prompt a vehicle being sold on a broken one often will. Often when the cam-belt breaks the damage caused to the vehicle engine can be fatal as well as damage to valves, gaskets and cylinder heads.
3. Differentials
Differentials are often missed and are generally used when cutting corners and often fail because due care of oil has been neglected. Repairing differential damage can be costly because the labor charge is high in cost and parts such as seals and gaskets may also need attention.
4. ECU Problems
Engine control unit or the ECU is the brains of the operation (vehicle) and mainly controls braking, engine and transmission management. Problems with the ECU take a long time to fix and in many cases garages recommend replacing the full ECU.
5. Engine Failure
When it comes to anything involving your vehicle’s engine it’s going to be pricey, whether the damage be minor or massive, in most cases it’s common for the vehicle to be scrapped as not many buyers want to invest in vehicles with damaged engines.
6. Gearbox Faults
Similar to engine failure gearbox failure can be just as damaging to your vehicle and also as expensive to fix and often occurs through lack of oil attention and lubricant. It’s not uncommon for owners to buy pre owned reconditioned gearboxes they are effective but can be quite pricey.
7. Suspension Snaps
Suspend issues tend to occur when vehicles have been in some sort of accident, and the function of the suspension often depends on how road worthy it is. Most problems with suspension stem from dust, rust, wear and tear and hitting unruly bumps in the road.
8. Wiring Looms
The wiring looms job is to control the electricity that flows through the vehicle and a working system is all well and good but should it fail diagnosis of the problem may become a little more complicated. The wiring loom is often out of eyeshot and is difficult to access and identify.
