The types of springs used in VW Campervan conversions
There’s four types of leaf springs which are used frequently in van suspensions, this includes…
- Torsion bar – this is a straight bar with twists, one end will be secured to the chassis and the other end will be secured to the wheel hub by the lever. As the hub moves up and down, the torsion bar twists.
- Coil – coil springs is similar to a torsion bar but they are wound into coils and it’s the bar’s resistance to twist that provides the spring action.
- Leaf – leaf springs are simply a flat bar with support at either end and the axle is usually located in the middle of the spring. The bar will resist being bent and provide a spring rate.
- Air – these compromise a rubber bellow which is filled with compressed air and the higher the air pressure the bigger the diameter of the bag and the more weight it will be able to support.
The leaf spring is there to support the mass of the van as well as absorb shock loads whilst permitting the wheels to follow furrows along the road surface, drain covers and potholes.
