How Many Miles Will A Van Last?
Unlike cars, vans are designed for high mileage and it isn’t uncommon to see 100,000 miles clock up quite quickly on a relatively new van. Obviously if you’re buying a new van, then you shouldn’t be worrying about how many miles a van will last, as you’ll likely have moved onto your next van before you even reach a point, where the van becomes costly to run. However, if you are buying a new van, then you do need to consider the amount of mileage you’ll be doing as many HP, PCP and Lease deals come with mileage restrictions and you could find yourself with a hefty bill if you exceed this.
But to answer the question How many miles will a van last?, the answer is simple, every van is different. How a van is cared for will impact the overall mileage it can cover, as vans that are left to rot will quite literally rot away. However, if a van is well cared for then it should reach 100,000 without any real issue. Vans such as Transits, will easily run to 200,000 with ease. However, most vans will struggle to reach 250,000 or more without requiring a high level of regular maintenance.
If you’re thinking about purchasing a van, whether it’s for business or personal use, then a new van might be a good option. However, should you be looking for a more cost-effective option, then a used van is probably the best option. Any van under 100,000 genuine miles will be considered a good investment, and anything over 100,000 miles, we suggest having a mechanic with you to check over the van, but you should still find yourself with a good van.
If the van has over 200,000 miles, then you need to weigh up things such as the cost of maintenance, what the van has previously been used for and what the service history is like. We are not saying vans with over 200,000 miles on the clock aren’t worth it, you just need to make sure you do your due diligence before purchasing one.

What Is The Best Type of Van To Buy?
The best type of van to buy is the one that best meets your requirements. Vans do come in all shapes and sizes and you need to pick the option that meets both your needs or that of your business. If you’re looking to carry a lot of weight or do regular journeys then you’ll need a van with lower mileage and good suspension. Whereas if you are using a van for local or casual use, then you could find a used and higher mileage model is the best option for you. Vans such as Ford Transits and Mercedes Sprinters are highly reliable vans and you see these on the road at 15 and 20 years old.
Should I Buy A Used Van With High Mileage?
This will depend on your own requirements, however a used van with high mileage isn’t always a bad thing. Vans are made to run for miles and miles on end and as long as the van has previously been well cared for, then you shouldn’t have an issue. Vans less than 200,000 miles on the clock will still be good vans. However if you are planning doing long journeys yourself or heavy loads, then a van with 150,000 miles or less on the clock might be the better option for you.
One of the most important things to remember with vans isn’t the engine you should be worried about, it’s actually rust and suspension. Due to the conditions and weights most vans are put under, you need to ensure that the van isn’t rotting from the outside or on the undercarriage. In addition to this, having the suspension checked and parts such as the leaf springs, will help you make a more informed decision about whether to buy a used van or not.
